The village has remains from the early Stone Age. Here the hunters came by
when they were hunting animals in the flourishing and rich valley.
Now and then they lost some of their weapons, it could be a stone axe, a
spear point or an arrowhead, which can be found even in our days.
During the period of the Mycenaeans the village reached the climax of its
splendor period. Here the ceramic pots, weapons and other tools typical for
that periodwere made.
On the mountainsides, which at that time still were forested, the officials
in high positions had their summer residences. They were then able to send
messages to each other with help of fires during the night.
When the Mycenaeans with their allies conquered Troy and brought back the
Lovely Helena to her right place and her legitimated husband, fires from one
mountaintop to the next immediately messaged it. Even these days you can see
here and there small fires during the winter. Shepherds use them to warm
themselves and to tell other people where they are staying.
During the Antique and Roman period the valley was the recreation center
including gymnastics and sport centers as well as bathhouses.
During the Byzantine period though, the Christians saw these buildings and
centers as heathen, and they were all torn down.
That also happened during the Second World War. German soldiers used to visit the village
once a week to collect provisions. It happened one day that a group of the
partisans, who had their base in the mountains, had the whole German column,
which included six men, killed. As soon as the Germans learned what had
happened, they sent a troop, which surrounded the village. At that time they
did not succeed in taking prisoners, because all their enemies were able to
hide in the ravines situated in the surrounding area.
As a revenge the Germans destroyed the whole village by burning it to the
ground. A few days later the Germans forced all the men of the village to
gather on the square, and they chose forty young men to be brought to Argos
to be executed as compensation for the six German soldiers.
Fortunately, for some reason that decision was changed in the last moment
and all the young men were able to return to their families. Maybe the reason
for letting these men free was that village people did not make the action in
the first place.
Today the most important source of livelihood is modern farming in form of
cultivating olives trees, tobacco and citrus fruits. A very important product
is also the Extra Virgin olive oil - that is the oil of the best quality.
There are also some sheep farming. From the sheep you get the well-known
Greek Feta cheese as well as other cheeses, which are typical for the area.
The river Asterion flows through this rich valley. The river drys out in the
summer, but from it the valley has gotten its form and special character.
Unfortunately the human activities of our days has destroyed the natural
beauty of the nature. In olden times the valley and the mountains surrounding
had the whole fauna of the animals, which were dominating the Southern and
Central parts of Europe. Here you could see capricorn, deer, wild boars, and
horses. Among other wild beasts there were cave bears and lions.
The lion hunting was a very popular pastime for the militant and
inconsiderate Mycenaeans. You can find beautiful frescos, which shows scenes
of these hunting trips. Of course the most famous lion hunter was Hercules.
He succeeded in killing a lion with his bear hands. But he was not just any
one; he was the result of Zeus' escapade with a local princess.
The town situated nearest to the village is Argos. Argos is one of the oldest
towns in the whole world. It has been of great value in all times as a link
in the western culture. Here you also can find an amphitheater, which has
been cut straight in the rock. It is the oldest amphitheater in the whole
world.
Further on I will describe the province of Argos. Please be patient, I assure you that it will be worth it. Feel free to write to me, and tell about your own opinions. Welcome back!
