Outline of Krzeszów Abbey's History

1242 Anna the widow of the Piastic Count of Silesia - Henryk II Pobozny (the Pious) -orders a foundation for the Benedictines from Czech Opatovice. It includes a part of thewooded Zadrna Vally for clearing and bringing it into cultivation (May 8). An abbey comes into being.
1292 The Piastic Count Bolko I of Swidnica and Jawor delivers the abbey to the Cistercians from Henryków. A Gothic stone church is consecrated
1318? A miraculous Virgin Mary's picture comes from Italy.
1426 The Hussites devastate the Monastery Complex and murder several dozen monks.
1454 The abbot Michael II reconstructs the Monastery Complex.
1618-48 Thirty Years' War; the Monastery Complex is robbed and devastated (1622, 1623); the precious library suffers from fire (1633).
1622 The Miraculous virgin Virgin Mary's picture is found under the sacristy floor where it hade been hidden during the Hussite invasion.
1660-96 Abbot Bernard Rosa - "Krzeazów's golden years": among other the St: Joseph Confraternity is founded (1669), the Abbey Church is started to be baroquized; the Way of the Cross and the Betlejem Complex are built.
1677 A great fire in the Monastery Complex.
1690-96 The St: Joseph's Church is built for the St Joseph Confraternity.
1728-34 Abbot Innocentius Fritsch - the Gothic Abbey Church is replaced with a big and splendid Baroque temple.
1735-38 The Mausoleum of Piastic Counts of Swidnica and Jawor is erected.
1740-63 The Three so-called Silesian Wars between Prussia and Austria; Krzeszów with almost whole Silesia becomes Prussian.
1768-87 Abbot Placidus Mundfering - a new, baroque monastery is under construction (never finished).
1810 The Monastery and its properties become secularizated by the Prussian state. The monks are expelled; the Abbey Church becomes a parish one; the village is ruined economically.
1919 The Monastery is settled by the German Benedictines from Emaus of Prague.
1924 An abbey is established again.
1940-45 The Hitlerite Third Reich authorities transform the monastery into DP-Camp and a transitory camp for Jews, as well into a transitory store of evacuated museum pieces.
1945 Krzeszów and Silesia again in Poland after a long time.
1946 The Polish Benedictine Nuns displaced of Lwów take possession of the monastery.
1970 A few Cistercians from Wachock come. A renovation starts.
1997 The pope John Paul II crowns the miraculous Virgin Mary's picture of Krzeszów (in Legnica, on June 2).
1998 The Pope John Paul II grants the title"Basilica Minor" to the Assumption's Church (August 29).
