My garden

My garden is rather big but may not be so much to boast about. There are not so many flower beds as I wish, but that is now changing. I have finished a rock-garden and this summer (2004) a new flower bed for perennials will be ready. I have lots of other arrangements ready in my head, so what is now lacking is energy! The biggest cultivated part is the plot where I grow my vegetables.

I have two green-houses and I used to have one of them heated during the winter. Due to the increasing costs I have had to make other arrangements for the plants that need temperatures above freezing point. One of the green-houses is used for tomatoes and other warmth-loving plants, in the other house I keep mainly cactee during the summer. The tomatoe house is also used for seedlings of perennials and annuals from March to June, at what time the risk for frost is over at last. During that period I have to heat it with an electric fan. Also potted plants like Fuchsias and Geraniums are kept there until they can safely be placed outside.

As my little Eden is quite apart from other houses I am often visited by different kinds of wild-life. The most exciting thing is that the lynx have increased very much in numbers and it happens that I can get a glimpse of one passing by. One good thing with this is that there are not at all so many roe-dears as it used to be. These are a real nuisance for a gardener! The area around my house is also famous for its bird life which I can enjoy in the garden.

Mistletoe is very rare in Sweden and its main habitat is around the lake Mälaren, about 30 km south from where I live. I have successfully managed to grow some plants in one of my appletrees and can now harvest seeds from these plants and spread them to other interested gardeners. I have made a page with sowing instructions for this interesting plant.
