North American P51 D Mustang

Mustang "Yellow Kilo" has an interesting history. It was build at the North American plant at Inglewood,California 1944. Shipped over to Europe during autumn the same year and stationed at Duxford airfield north of London, belonging to 8th Fighter Group. The pilot Hubert Davis, flew the aircraft until the end of the war. Three confirmed kills and one probable was recorded. (2 Me262 and 1 Me109)
After the war the Swedish Air Force bought a surplus of 161 P51 D's. Our aircraft was used by the 3rd squadron 16th Wing (F16, Uppsala), until 1953, when the new jets started to arrive in great numbers. (Vampires, SAAB J21R, The Flying Barrel, and others). 25 of the Mustangs were sold to Israel and the rest to central America.
In 1986 this aircraft was bought back to Sweden from Israel, and got it's new home at 1st Wing airfield( F1, Hässlö).When removing the paint from the wings and the fuselage you could clearly see the old Swedish Air force markings (three yellow crowns on a blue, yellow circle), and furthermore when locking the horizon with the On/Off button, a red warning flag appeared stating "Låst"( Swedish, same as "Locked" in English.) In the aft part of the tail there is a placard, with the number 26158. 26 stands for J26 (SAF : Fighter model 26 and 158 corresponds to the individual "Yellow Kilo",[yellow stands for the 3rd squadron and K for the 11th aircraft in the squadron]).
