No Doubt on "ZTV Nytt"(Transcript of television interview. Febuary 21, 2000)Trascribed and translated by: Emily Wood
Announcer: After the album "Tragic Kingdom", No Doubt withdrew from the spotlight for several years. Now they are back and ZTV News met them at their rehersal place in London. Gwen Stefani: It's interesting, songs are such a mystery. You never know, I mean if you could figure out how to do it you'd do it all the time but somedays you get in there and you start playing and nothing comes out... And you have to go down the hill and have an ice-cream... We did that alot on the making of this record. Reporter: No Doubt was formed in 1986 and after releasing a couple of albums with limited sucess they got thier big breakthrough, almost 10 years later, with "Tragic Kingdom". After about 1 year the album had climbed on the Billboard chart, reaching the number one spot. Today "TK" has been estimated to have sold more that 15 million copies. Tony Kanal: Last time around, when we were making "Tragic Kingdom", we had a lot of other stuff going on in our lives. We were going to school and working jobs. This time, the sucess of "TK" gave us the opportunity just to focus on making this new record. And we told ourselves, before we started, that we weren't going to put any time limit on how long we took to make the record. It ended up taking two years but it was two years well spent. It wouldn't be the same record unless we'd gone through this process of writing songs and recording and starting over and experimenting, so.. Reporter: Furthermore, Gwen has contributed to the song "So far, so pleased" on Prince's album. A collabotation she'd gladly continue. She's also played with her boyfriend Gavin Rossdale on Bush's album. It is the temporary break-up from Gavin that the song "Ex-girlfriend" is about. The new album "Return of Saturn" is more serious and the lyrics are about longing to get married, having children and being grown-up. Alot is pretty far from the hits on "TK". Gwen Stefani: The hardest part on this album, which was different from last time, was trying to take these songs and make them a No Doubt song. What kind of style are we now? You know, after all this time we've evolved and we've grown up and we've kind of grown out of some of the stuff that we've done in the past. And once it gets to the stage where Adrian is involved and eveyone's putting their parts down it's just a weird process to see just what the song is going to end up being. Studio announcer: No Doubt's new album "Return of Saturn" is released in Sweden, April 10th.
