NO DOUBT with special guests "the Vandals"
HOVET · Stockholm, Sweden
17 Sept 1997 kl 19.30
Playlist (pretty much in order):
Disney's Electric Light Parade, Tragic Kingdom, Different People, Happy Now, Just A Girl, Hey You, Excuse Me Mr. , The Climb, Don't Speak, Sunday Morning, Move On, Dj's (Sublime cover), Total Hate, End It On This, Spiderwebs and Oi to the world (Vandals song).
At 19.30h The Vandals step on the stage infront of 8000 Swedish No Doubt fans. The cult punk-band from Orange County, California is fairly unknown to the Swedish crowd, but they do a good job warming up the audience.
Singer Dave Quackenbush, monkeyboy and guitarist Warren Fitzgerald, bassist Joe Escalante and drummer Josh Freese cause a giggle here and there. And when No Doubt's own Adrian Young takes on the drumset to help out on a song, most of the crowd wakes up. But later on when Gwen Stefani herself flys on the stage doing all kinds of acrobatic movement and sings the first verse of the old Grease classic "Summer Lovin' " with Dave, everyone else wakes up too.
After the Vandals and a rearanging of the stage, it's time for what we've all been waiting for - NO DOUBT! They open the show as usual with the sounds of Disney's Electric Parade going over into "Tragic Kingdom". A massive entrance as always. Throughout the first couple of songs, no one seems to know what to do. A lot of little girls, and other people who shouldn't be infront of the stage are infact infront of the stage. There's just a lot of pushing and shoving. But Right before "Hey You", Gwen wants us to sing a Swedish song for them so everyone starts singing our national anthem. The whole crowd just breaks out into this wierd unity and from there on we stand tall. Everyone starts to singing along, cheering and most of all stops moshing around.
- "Now this next song I think you are one of the country's who know it the best. Let's see if you can guess" Gwen says as she walks over to Tom and wants a "me, me, me...". Everyone knows that it's "Sunday Morning" and starts screaming:
- "YOOOOU, you came in..."
- "You know it?" Gwen goes, we all go:
- "YEEEEAAH"
- "You can't know it from that !"
- "YEEEES" we go. Gwen gives it another shot "me, me, me..."
- "YOOOOU came in with the breeze" we go. Gwen starts laughing and says:
- "So you think you know everything, huh?"
And as we respond with a big YES, "Sunday Morning" kicks off.
"Sunday Morning" is only one of the songs that really exploded. Everyone was singing every word and so loud that you could hardly hear Gwen and the music. In the middle of the song. Gwen wants us to sing "You sure have changed since yesterday". She wants us to sing better than the Danish people from yesterday, and we do. We completely blow them away. Gwen goes:
- "Some people just really know how to sing".
The rest of the show includes a cover of Sublime's "Dj's", traditional presentation of the band, Tom doing a solo behind his head and Gwen officially declaring that Sweden definitly is one of their top 10 countries and then leaving us with "End it on this". We couldn't let them go yet so after a long, loud and massive cheering of "One more time" (in swedish and english) and "No Doubt" they finally come out again.
First of all Adrian walks up to the microphone and says:
- "You guys really rock, I love you, I could sleep with everyone of you, I mean it"
The crowd is all wild as they blast off with "Spiderwebs". The building was literally shaking. After "Spiderwebs" the Vandals join No Doubt on stage and the do "Oi to the world" which will be out this christmas on a compilation. During this song Adrian also stagedived in his white skirt, which drove the crowd crazy.
So the verdict of the concert is:
GOOD: The energy, the chemistry and the all-round great concert experience.
BAD: To much from the "Tragic Kingdom" album and a lot was the same as last time they were here. But then again who cares, They ROCKED ! And that's all that really matters. It's not like they've had time to prepare anything new.
