Version history

961210. The beginning. Late at night, the first lines of text are written down on a Powerbook 180 in a South Miami apartment.

961211. Graphics and animations are incorporated. Lacking a suitable host for my new web page, I create, in parallel, a crude, completely unrelated temporary home page on another server. That server offered very limited possibilities for creative page making but the page would fill its original purpose; to help friends get in touch with me.

961212. Page get posted at GeoCities, which offers excellent service and which I can warmly recommend to others. Small changes are made, and some not yet supported features are removed for increased functionality. The required GeoCity logo is added at the end of the page.

961213 (Lucia Day). HTML code cleaned up. Some graphics added. A link from the temporary home page is set up.

961218. Yule version.

970114. Minor text changes in main pages. The "Notes on the social and cultural life in the United States of America" page is added.

970115. Version history moved to separate page, which is in English only. Some additions to the "Notes". A link to a noteworthy beer-related page is created.

970116. Technical improvements (titles, keywords etc). Small text changes.

970120. A first step towards a major reorganisation of the page is made with the introduction of the "American" page, a nexus for material (my own as well as external) relating to life in America seen from a Swedish viewpoint. A page in Swedish, "lussekatter på amerikanska", and one in English, which may one day evolve into a picture exhibition, are also posted. Some links are introduced. Text changes and additions in previously posted pages are made.

970213. The corresponding "Swedish" page is introduced. So far, all the material accessible from there is external. I finally keep my promise to create links to the homepages of my friends, also being Swedish cultural phenomena and thus properly included under this heading.

970217. The "Notes on the social and cultural life in the United States of America" page is redesigned and expanded. A counter is placed on the index page. Some links and graphics added.

970224. The "Under Construction" sign is finally removed from the two front pages. Repairs are made of the damage (lost image locations etc) caused through the use, in desperation, of a PC with Windows and Netscape 2.0 for downloading and editing some of the material. Some of the "No software from Microsoft was used..." statements are removed. Additional links to E-mail directories and alternative mailboxes are added, after my primary E-mail server (University of Miami damned-pile-of-junk Newssun server) goes down for the umpteenth time. Text renderings of images are introduced, to help keep track of which picture goes where the next time image locations get screwed up. Some space on the front pages is reserved for observation of upcoming events and celebrations. Changes in these spaces will not be regarded as new versions.

970410. A trilingual logotype is introduced. Some changes in the layout and graphics of the front pages. Background colour of front pages changed to white. Very minor text changes.

970417. The cultural page is finally posted. Links from the front pages are created. The space reserved for observation of upcoming events and celebrations is placed in a table cell under a permanent heading. Some other, minor changes are made to the front pages.

970528. After some unannounced experiments, the links between the English and Swedish versions of the front pages are officially replaced with sensitive areas in the logotype. Several images are removed, and a new Apple/Macintosh logo is introduced.

970612. The first appearance of frames. An experimental, framed page with text-edited HTML code, and a cluster of subordinate pages, constitute a minimal exhibition of pictures of Sweden. The main "Sweden" page is updated with more links to this page, to an additional collection of Uppsala pictures, and to a CIA fact sheet on Sweden. Text changes on the main "Sweden" page and both the Swedish and English versions of the front page are made. Another "Under Construction" sign is removed, since it becomes increasingly clear that construction will never stop and the signs are meaningless.

970714. Over a period of some weeks, most pages are updated. The old collection of "pictures from America" is replaced with a technically more satisfying, framed collection of postcard views of Miami. The "cultural notes" are updated and expanded with a page in Swedish. Both the Swedish and English first pages are re-designed somewhat. The "culture page" is split into four, in order to facilitate the updating of film reviews.

970722. After some hesitation, I put a picture of myself on the first pages. Some other, minor changes.

970812. A guestbook is introduced. Yet another page with notes on American phenomena is added, containing some new material and some moved from other pages. Some Internet Explorer-specific code is introduced. Some old and messy HTML code is cleaned up. Some technical changes for standardisation's sake. Many details changed.

970824. Both front pages are extensively reworked into a graphically oriented interface. Some personal information is moved from the front pages to pages of its own.

971112. A clone of the page is placed on a Swedish server. Small changes on the front pages, to reflect my relocation to Sweden. First attempt to use PageMill.

971113. Repairs of the extensive damage done by PageMill to my pages. The program is probably OK to produce pages with from scratch, but it was poison to my partly hand-hacked, partly Netscape-created code. Imagemaps gone, links redirected, no end of misery. Never again.

971116. A form for ordering the entrance code to my house is placed on the page, both in Swedish and English.

971118. The counter, which suddenly reported 1839859 hits for my web page (that's one visitor a minute for three and a half year!) was forcibly reset to 200, a pretty close estimate of what it ought to have been. The GeoCities report for this period mentioned something about certain pages having had their counters reset by mistake.

971122. New feature (and new page): Screen captures of amusing error messages and odd events. Swedish only. Almost all old material is placed under the heading "The Year We Stayed In Dade or How I Survived Suntan U". Dade being the county where much of Greater Miami is located, and the popular nickname Suntan U giving an idea of the ambition level of many students at the University of Miami.

980111. "Personal" info updated. Also added was some propaganda aiming to spread knowledge of various file-transfer encoding formats, and a link to a site devoted to this subject.

980124. Page is being split into a "Florida Page", which will remain at GeoCities, and an "Official Home Page", which will be on the Swipnet server. Updating of all "Non-Floridan" pages existing at my GeoCities site ceases, and those pages will gradually be taken down.
NEW TOOLS: Being dissappointed with most existing HTML editors, from this day on, I am using WordPerfect 3.5 as HTML editor. So far, it seems pretty buggy, but those are rather benign bugs (something that can't be said about, for instance, the Netscape 4 Composer).

*** Only the history of "Swedish" pages is described below. ***

980205. A counter is added on the front pages.

980308. A new department is created: The Marketplace. Existing in a Swedish version only, it is intended to aid me in buying, and perhaps also selling, computer peripherals and other stuff. The link to the old "Cultural Pages" is removed. These can now only be reached by way of the Florida Pages.
NEW TOOLS: A chooser extension called Myrmidon, which "prints" pages from any (?) program to HTML files. Seems to work remarkably well, in its simplicity.

980408. Signing and reading the guest book should now work, by way of an "anteroom page". The link to a cgi-script on an external server had become meaningless when the front pages were transferred to the Swipnet server. Thanks to Tomas Winbladh for reporting the malfunction.

980708. A friendly letter from Dan Pettersson inspires me to update the page a bit, after three months of laziness. Both front pages are slightly updated and the code cleaned up. The "Life in Sweden" page, which was simply a copy of the GeoCities version, logotype and all, was somewhat rewritten and some errors in the code were fixed.

980718. The Error Messages page is updated with nine new messages. All images for this page are placed in a sub-directory to tidy things up a bit.

980721. The pages "Life in America", "Underligheter" and "Lussekatter", that had only been crudely imported from the GeoCities website, are properly checked, links adjusted et c. I discovered that some images had become corrupt after having been accidentally transferred as "text" rather than "data", since an old version of Netscape had file-typed them as text when I copied them from the GeoCities site. That is now fixed, but there may be more of them - please notify me if you find any.

980723. More changes to "Life in Sweden", "Life in America", "Underligheter", "Notes..." and "Said and Done". The main changes in actual content are (1) the exclusion of the entire "Politically Correct" department, a good idea which I had to give up because all interesting links finally traced back to right-wing nuts, Christian fundamentalists and other unpleasant people, and (2) a new link from the Sweden page to a page run by (believe it or not) the Mormons, a collection of their impressions as missionaries in Sweden.
TOOLS: I have long ago given up all tools since also WordPerfect 3.5 is a total disaster as far as HTML is concerned. It stripped the imagemap-code from my pages. Everything is done with a text editor now. I'll probably try BBEdit again soon, now that I've updated it.

990214. Both front pages are given a new, more uniform appearance with buttons linked to the different departments. Some minor changes to "The year we stayed in Dade".
