There are two interpreters in each booth. They listen to the speaker through the headphones and interpret immediately - i e simultaneously - into a microphone. The interpreters take turns for about 20-30 minutes each.
This is what it looks like in the conference room. Every speaker has to use a microphone to allow the interpreters to hear him in the booth. If you listen to interpretation you use headphones.
