For those of you who don't know, a tallis is a Jewish prayer shawl. It is worn by Jewish adults (traditionally men, but times have changed) in fulfillment of the commandment to wear fringes on the corners of one's garment. Religious law imposes few restrictions on the construction of the garment--it cannot contain both wool and linen and the knots on the corners must be tied in a certain pattern. The tallesim (or tallises or tallitot, depending on your linguistic preference) depicted here are part of a series in progress called "Tio Tallitot" ("Ten Tallesim").
