The elk is the biggest animal in Sweden. The male can be about 2 meters high and weighs about 300-400 kg. The female can be almost 1,5 meter high and weighs between 200-300 kg. The elks are bigger in the north of Sweden than in the south. The colour of the elks is darkbrown and a little bit grey and black.
The male elk has horns and he drops them every winter, in the spring they grow again. The horns grow and grow more every year. But when the male is older his horns shrink. The elks live in the woods and they like to be in the water. The elk is also a good swimmer. They live in the whole of Sweden, except from the big Island of Gotland. The biggest elk that was found weighed more than 1000 kg.
The elk has a very little tail. The elks couple in September or in the middle of October. They eat green vegetation in summer like leaves from trees and herbs, they also eat bark from trees in the winter. The elk eats about 30-50 kg every day in summer and 6-20 kg in winter. Every year about 100.000 elks are shot in Sweden during the hunting period of elks. The hunting period is in September in the north and in October in the south. If you shoot elks you must have a licence.
In America the elk is called Wapiti. The Wapiti is lower than the European elk. The male Wapiti is about 1,5 meters high and weighs about 310 kg. The female Wapiti is about 1,2 meters high and weighs about 200 kg. The elk also lives in Canada, the Baltic countries, Norway and Siberia. The calf weighs 1-17 kg when it's born. The calf is redbrown when it's newborn. The calf is with his mother for two years. The elk lives alone the whole year except in winter when they form small bands.
