Quake 3: Arena level editing information
Here are all available info on Quake3 level editing. There will be much more information here as the Q3 release date comes closer. A lot of the info below is taken from
Dan Naoumov's The Unofficial Quake 3: Arena FAQ.
Level editing in Quake Arena will provide possibility to create more realistic enviroments than ever, but it will be much harder at the same time. Level designer
will have more control over what polygons are seen in each level, giving them more responsibility over the vis'ing and performance of levels. As Carmack
stated, compiling level will still take ages on slower machines. He also stated that he wants to have all light sources to exist in the world, although level designers
are arguing with him over this point. Textures that will emit light, need not be fullbright. Levels will feature non-rational Bezier curves, which, especially when
combined with the specular lighting, can be used to create more realistic curved surfaces.
Because of the many features added to Q3, such as curved surfaces, editing will become harder. It will still be possible to edit levels as before but
it will take longer, and it'll be harder to create a "good" maps.
Editors
No 'home-made' editors have been announced yet, but Robert Duffy, author of QERadiant, has signed a contract with id and he is working on the Quake3 level editor, QE3Radiant.
It will have support for both Quake 3 and Q3: Arena. You can download QERadiant (for Q2) here.
There will be three versions of QE3Radiant: One for id Software's internal use, one for Ion Storm and one for the public. QE3Radiant will probably ship with the Q3: Arena CD.
-QE3Radiant will possibly include the following features:
-Entity/Model preview & positioning
-Lighting preview (works on paper, haven't tried it yet)
-Update to the DLL bsp tools
-Easier integration of external build tools
-Smallish stuff like mouse wheel support etc.
-Update to BrushScripts (finally)
I heard on some website that Virtus, the company that made Deathmatch Maker 1 & 2 and Hexmaker, is working on a Q3: Arena editor. I doubt it's true though, especially since Virtus doesn't support their editors any longer,
Macmillan bought the rights or something.
