The regiment traces its heritage to the fänika (tactical
unit used in the late dark ages) raised in Västergötlands southern parts. The
oldest documents are from 1549. From the infantry in these parts a regiment was
raised in the early 1600:s that was devided into three smaller regiments in
1624. One of these was named Älvsborgs regiment and had Nils Ribbing as its
first commander. The other two regiments became Skaraborgs regiment and
Hallands regiment. Älvsborgs regiment was located in Borås and was
disbanded in 1997. Between 1949 to 1963 it was an armored infantry regiment.
The regiments colors are yellow and black.
