The Award

The Copper Coin Award is a very respected and unique award consisting of a handmade, engraved miniature copper replica of a 1-Daler piece from 1715. The size is 71x71x3 mm and weight is 130 gr. Square-shaped coins were once upon a time a type of coin peculiar to Sweden. The coining of large copper-pieces goes back as far as 1644 when the 10-Daler appeared. The coining of square-shaped pieces then went on till 1776.
The values used were 10,8,5,4,3,2,1 and ½ Daler. In 1715 the weight of the 1 Daler coin was fixed at 757 grams. The 10 Daler coin from 1644 is the biggest coin in the world (300x700 mm weight 19,7 kilos or 44 pounds). 25 539 pieces were minted of which only a few have been preserved.
The metal used come mainly from the Falu Copper Mine (as the award-coin). The mining started in the days of the Vikings and finished on December 8, 1992 at 5.48 p.m. On that occasion the last volley detonated. The mining company is the oldest registered incorporated company in the world.
The award can be achieved by all licensed amateurs, including club-stations, who have been in two-way QSO with members of Falu Radio-Club. All contacts must be in the same mode.
