The first steps towards putting together the group Aqua was made in 1989
when Claus and Soeren got together and
started making music together. They met René during the
recording of the soundtrack for the Danish movie "Fraekke Frida". René
eventually brought the Norwegian vocalist Lene along to Denmark
and introduced her to the other two. Together they founded the group "Joyspeed",
for which they managed to get a Swedish record contract and spent one week on the Swedish
music charts, with the debut single "Itzy Bitzy". The four members weren't happy
enough with the way things were going, so they broke off the contract and decided to start
all over from scratch. Their inspiration for the group name "Aqua" is said to
have come from a poster, with the words "Aquarium" on it, hanging on the wall in
their rehearsal-room. Aqua it was, and GOD saw it was good. Shortly thereafter, they signed a record deal with the Danish
branch of Universal Music.
Aqua´s first single off their new record deal was "Roses are red"
which was released in September of 1996 and climbed straight up to the top of the Danish
charts where it stayed put for several months, and is still today (25/06/97) on the top
charts here in Sweden. In February of '97 yet another single was released. This time it
was the song "My oh my" which grabbed the #1 spot on the hit
singles list in Denmark and later went gold after just 6 days.
Eventually they released the first official album titled: "Aquarium"
which without a doubt hit the ultimate jackpot! Although Denmark was not the only country
where the album literally sold in thousands. Like with many other Scandinavian artists who
introduce themselves to the Asian people, Aqua's success rushed to an ultimate high when
they introduced the "Aquascope" sound to the Korean populace and sold over
55,000 copies.
The proof that "The sound of Aqua" was missing
in Danish music, came when the group recieved platinum for the sale of "Rosed are
red", and furthermore received a nomination for a Grammy for this years best Danish
dance publication. Aqua´s second single "My oh my" was released in February
1997 and went straight to the top on the single chart. They received gold after just 6
days, which is extraordinary for a small country like Denmark.
