The Environment Prize of Örnsköldsvik's Municipality was 1997 awarded to Domsjö pulp mill.
The prize was presented by Anna Lind, Swedish Minister of Environment :
.....for efforts far beyond authority demands to reduce emission into water,
and active and successful co-operation in the restoration of the Mo River.....

[4kB-oxygensaturation.gif] The Örnsköldsvik estuary has a low rate of water renewal. Areas of seabed which used to lack fauna have now been partly re-colonised. Salmon trout and salmon are once again migrating past the mill on their way up the Mo river to spawn.

Emission into water

To reduce the discharge into water the mill have: a closed loop bleachery, deresination removal, sedimentation basins and a Biological treatment plant.
[4kB-BOD7.gif] Notice:The Biological treatment plant was built 1985.

[3kB-aox.gif] Thanks to two-stage digestion, chlorine-free bleaching and a closed bleach plant, the AOX emission has greatly been reduced.

Emission into air

To reduce the discharge into the air the mill have : scrubbers for stack gas and blowing gases in the digester house and where the chemicals are recycled. The recovery boilers and the barkboiler are equipped with electro filters and flue gas cleaners.

[3kB-sulphur.gif] With electrostatic precipitators and flue gas cleaning the emissions of sulphurous substances is reduced.
