The explanation

We wera assigned as support to a bunch of kill-crazed dwarfs. I have had better assignements, but for once the dwarfs seemed to know what they were doing.

The soulless will approach from the northeast. They will move towards you. There are two possible congestion zones, marked in red on the left. Using the top one seems smart, but if you do, some soulless will flank you. I suggest placing an ambush in the other position.

"We are gonna make a minefield and when the soulless enters it. KA-BOOM. Hehehe!"

Take the nine dwarfs that are on the frozen lake are and do a preset of them. Have them assume circle formation inside the red area I outlined above. (Select them, press 0 and indicate the position) Make a group of the berserkers and one of the four remaining dwarfs in the west. Have these dwarves start picking up charges from the storage here.

Most of the dwarfs were busy laying charges, while others were filling thier backpacks with more charges.

The first group has reached it's positions. Select them and press "T" and they will all lay a charge. Move them slightly south and lay more charges in circle overlapping the first ones. Try to fill as much of the area as possible.
Dont forget to have the dwarves in the west pick up satchels.

The stupid dwarfs had sent a lone scout down the lake to determine the position of the soulless. Miraculously he managed to outrun the soulless.

A dwarven scout will approach. There is no safe way of rescuing him. Just hope he makes it. Your first laying group should be done. Send all except 2 of them - preferably veterans with previous kills - back to the satchel store. Move those there towards the ambush fields when they are filled up. Have them cover any obvious holes, or extend the range of the field.

The dwarves had done a pretty good job of making a minefield. But would the soulless go across it?

The ambush prepared.

A finished ambush should look something like this. It is uneven because not all dwarves carried the same number of satchel charges.

A horn blowed a small group of soulless came in. An experienced dwarf took out several of the soulless as our sergeant ordered us forward. We chopped them soulless up good.

A horn will blow and a soulless patrol approach. Have the 2 dwarves you kept, in preparation east of the minefield, with the berserkers behind them. When the patrol comes, have each dwarf throw one grenade, aiming in the middle. Then pull them back to a position slightly west of the minefield so they can set it off.
Whenever you have time, have the dwarves in the west pick up charges.

"Lure the rest of them here" the dwarf captain shouted to us. We ran down the lake and spotted a large force of soulless, brandishing their javelins. We turned back as a man. How were the dwarfs gonna take out that many.

Let the berserkers charge forward and take out the patrol. Let them continue east if you think your minefield is suffiecently good.
Move any empty dwarves up on the hill, and any dwarf with a charge down from it to prepare a second minefield below the western hill. (See picture below left).

We ran back behind the minefield and the 2 dwarven pros got ready.

When the berserkers spot more soulless move them back behind the minefield. They should be followed by many soulless.

The soulless got closer. They were on top of the minefield.

When the soulless are on top of the minefield, have your two front dwarves throw their charges by CTRL-clicking in the minefield.

And the dwarves threw their grenades. The first one was a miss, but the second one started setting of the whole minefield. I have never seen that many dead soulless.

Watch them blow.

With luck the whole minefield should be set off and do considerable damage to the soulless.

The surviving soulless scattered in confusion. Guess those dwarves aren't that stupid after all.

If you succeed in killing sufficently many the soulless will scatter and your units cheer. If you fail, pull back behind the second minefield and prepare to set it off. You did make a second field, right? If this does not do it, the ledge is a good position for grenade tossing, and you have a third minefield where the store is. Pull back, throw. Pull back.
