Force Ten from Stoneheim
"Where do you fools think you are going?"

Accessed times
since 1 february 98.

Mission: Make your way to the world knot in the northeast. Place satchel charges near one of its arms and blow it up.

Difficulties:

Unit usage.
Unit economy.

Main threats: Soulless.

Hints:

Take initially along only the dwarves you can handle in a combat situation.
The world knot is "trapped" so beware when you send a unit close.
When blowing up the world knot, place charges close to an arm and close to each other.

Film: No casualties

Note: This was my first attempt, so I am not really following my own advice and there is a certain amount of unproductive recon. However this film shows where the ghôls start and how not to blow up the world knot.

The explanation

It seemed like a shame, destroying a working world knot. But it could be used against us. There were also reports of enemy already near the knot. On our way we meet stupid peasants heading straight into the battle zone.

Leave behind all dwarves except 2 or possibly three. To many dwarves will just run into each other, and possibly blow each other up.

"You dwarves stay here. We only need 2 of you. The rest of you can come in and set the charges later"

Run down to the river, a patrol of thrall and soulless are crossing. Set your dwarf on the thrall, the archers on the soulless and the berserkers on either one.

There was a ford in our way, with a considerable force on the other side guarding it.
"Recon men! Maybe there is another way across"

A larger force of thrall and soulless are covering the ford.
There are 2 small knolls near the ford which are very usable positions for your archers. Also a good position is the icy ledge close to the northernmost of the visible undead (see arrow below left). From that position a good archer can pick off undead.

We ran out searching, and ran into some ghôls.

Successful recon.
2 groups of ghôls are hiding in the south. If you ignore them, one group will advance along the frozen river, the other group will hit the shrine later, coming in from the south and east. I strongly suggest taking out both groups before dealing with the ford.

The archers made feints across the fords, taking out a few soulless every time.

Other walktroughs suggest going south along the river and crossing the river near the waterfall. I don't think that is a good idea since you will be forced to deal with the entire force behind the ford at once, when you come around from the other side. From behind the ford you can pick of undead a few at a time. The ford protects you from the undead more than the other way around.

After a while the undead were so decimated they no longer could hold the ford. We went across and formed up on the other side. A dwarf sneaked through the forest above the undead and threw grenades at them. He seemed to have the time of his life.

Once the immediate vicinity of the ford is cleared (and you have defeated both waves of ghôls) get 2 dwarves across accompanied by all the berserkers and the majority of archers. Organise a defensive line somewhere facing north. Have the dwarves do hit and run operations against the undead from the east, preferably in groups of two. If a dwarf gets wounded pull him back behind you line and use another. Any archer still on the west side of the river will provide some cover.

Finally the world knot.
The dwarves pondered how to blow it up, but we were all interrupted by another force of undead.

Move towards the world knot and bring up all the dwarves. A force protecting the other ford will arrive. Shoot or serk down the soulless, grenade the thrall. (Heard it before?).

"Wait a minute. How do we know they wont come through the knot as we are setting the charges."
"You are right. Let us prepare."
When we were all set, I ran up towards the knot. I heard a strange sound and ran back. A wight had come through and blew itself up at once. Then came thrall and soulless. Our preparations came in real handy.

The world knot is trapped. Once you approach a wight will come through and immediately blow up. He is followed by more thrall and soulless.
So prepare. There is a nice defensive knoll directly south of the knot. Placing satchels on the road will help as will spreading out a few dwarves around the knot where they can throw grenades without risk of blowing up friendlies.

The dwarves set their charges around a pylon. When the lit the charges there was not even a dent in the pylon.
"Maybe we should set them at one side only" "Aye"
And that way it worked.

Wrong way to place the charges.
The right way.

Now to the task at hand. Do not make the mistake I made. Put the charges on one side of one pylon, not all around it.
