Mission: Destroy the Ghol idol located in the central eastern part of the map.
Difficulties:
Unit usage (Only dwarves against ghôls and soulless)
Main threats: Ghôls. Ghôls. Ghôls. and more Ghôls. some throwing puss-packets.
Hints:
All moving enemies move in predictable patterns, and are easy targets for mine fields.
There will be oppotunies to refill satchel charges twice.
When approaching a sitting bunch of ghôls, throw one of Balin's signal packets a bit
in front of them. This acts as a delayed action, self-igniting minefield. Select Balin, press T and click on the target area.
There is no need to kill all the ghôls on the open area near the idol, but it is possible.
Dont approach ghols with puss-packets in closed formations.
The idol's soft spot is in it's northeast corner, under the overhang, as close to it's middle as possible.
When fighting lots of attacking ghôls, direct some of the dwarves to throw their grenades at ghôls further back, or they might all toss grenades at the same ghôl.
For accurate throws, rely on Balin.
Film1: No casualties (By the book)
Film2: No casualties (Killing ALL the ghôlies)

The explanation |
|
This is what Balin told me: |
|
The entrance to the secret level lies in the southern of the two easternmost caves. If you played on normal a single wight came out of each of these caves. You will need to enter the cave before finishing the Sons of Myrgard, so you will need to save the game first if you want to finish both. |
|
The brave dwarves trekked through the caves. They blew away some ghôls as they came out of the caves on a plateau. |
|
You will arrive on a map where you will need to move north then south then east and finally north again. |
|
Almost immediately they were beset by a unit of ghôls. The dwarves lined up on the ledge of the plateau as the ghôls attacked. |
|
Get you dwarves into a line on top of the slope ASAP. A unit of ghôls will be attack. This will be good practice for the later more taxing attacks. |
|
The dwarves noticed a unit of ghôls moving in the
distance. They did not seem to have spotted the dwarves.
After a while the ghôls came back moving the same
route. |
|
A patrol of ghôls are moving in a predictable pattern. A minefield should come in very handy in dealing with it. I recommend placing the satchels in a circle as this will cover a large area while using a limited amount of satchels. Form a line BEHIND the minefield, not partially beside it like I do on the film. |
|
They saw a single ghôl guarding a cave in the west and approached on line. When the ghôl spotted them he ran into the cave and came back with lots of his wicked friends. The dwarves threw grenades after grenade and barely managed to get all the ghôls. |
|
There is a cave in the west where a large force of
ghôls will come out if you get close. Form a line and
have Balin throw one of his special packets a bit in front
of the cave. Direct the dwarves to throw at different
ghôls to spread the explosions in their midst. |
|
There was a single ghôl guarding a cave further north, but he really was alone. Worse was a pass guarded by many ghôls with puss-packets. Balin threw one of his special packets in front of them, and they charged him and got caught in it's explosion. The remaining ghôls were still dangerous, but the dwarves got the better of them. |
|
In the north corner of this part of the map is a congested pass, protected by puss-throwing ghôls. Form a line a bit back and advance Balin and another dwarf, keeping them separated. There is a small depression on the raised area of the pass. Have Balin throw one of his special packets there. The ghôls should attack, pull back the front dwarves, and get a few of those further back to attack. A well placed grenade will blow a ghol and spread his packet around. Break of if the ghôls do. Feint thus with a few dwarves till the ghols are gone. (This part is hard, please check my film for ideas) |
|
The dwarves found themselves on top of a high cliff overlooking the idol in the distance. Balin decided to leave some of the more badly wounded dwarves here. In the south were another group of ghôls with puss-packets. Feinting drew them out. Worse were the soulless with their accurate javelins. |
|
I left some dwarves here to minimize casaulties. If you
have taken small casualties, it's not a bad idea. Less
dwarves means less neccessary direction. |
|
Balin's unit came upon a store of satchel charges, and
suddenly a few more dwarves came down from the sky in
parachutes. The spotted a group of soulless moving. They
prepared a minefield, but decided to move the minefield
after observing the soulless a while. |
|
In the south end, reinforcements in the form of parachutists and satchels charges. A patrol of soulless moves in a circle. Observe their route, and place a minefield where they pass, say in the red circle I marked on the map. Blow the minefield with a single dwarf next time they come around. Repeat if neccessary. |
|
The dwarves could hear the ghôls chanting om the north and moved east. They came upon some solitary ghôls and soulless, but more importantly a satchel store. |
|
Go EAST. There will be solitary soulless and ghôls here, but if you got this far they should be no problem. |
|
The dwarves moved far north, down a slope, while keeping out of sight of the ghôls chanting. There seemed to be a piece missing in the northeast part of the idol. The dwarves placed their charges here and Balin threw an accurate grenade setting them off. With a thunderous crash the idol's "nose" came crashing down. |
|
Move north on the green area. Keep out of sight from the
ghôls - they see shorter than you do. Place charges
under the idol and have preferably Balin set them off. I do
not know how many are needed. I used 12 or 18. |

The explaination |
|
As we approached the idol, there was muttering among the
dwarves. |
|
Instead of going for the idol, you can place a minefield on the green slope, where the green dots are on the left. Most ghôls will come near the corner between the slope and the knoll and continue up the slope. |
|
They pulled back and formed two lines behind the
minefield. Meanwhile Brock volonteered to attract the
ghôls. He an up on a nearby knoll and started singing
that old dwarven children's tune: |
|
Pull back into a line. A made two in order to protect the decoy from the ghôls. Have a single dwarf run up on the knoll. As he reaches the top of the knoll the ghôls should spot him and run after him. |
|
Brock ran back north of the minefield. Some of the ghôls after him ran into the minefield as it blew, some were killed by grenades. Other ghôls approached the dwarves we had left on the cliff. They ghôls seemed to come for a long time. And then suddenly it was over. Balin had the dwarves on the ledge come down and blow the idol with their charges. |
|
Even with the minefield, there should be plenty of
ghôls that will need to be taken care of. Amazingly
the ghôls charged the dwarves on the cliff. Target
practice, I guess. |
