D/S Marie Nordström

Drum Sergeant Marie Nordström was born in 1966, and is the present leader of the drum-corps of the band. Marie, who joined the Murray Pipes & Drums in 1992, has a long and accomplished playing experience on both the bass drum and the tenor drum. She is also the secretary of the band.

In 1980 she started her playing career in The Griffin Pipes and Drums in Malmö, and was taught by Anders Andersson, more known as "Bulten". In 1988 she moved to Stockholm, where she was one of the initiators in the forming of a drum-corps in The Caledonian Pipe Band.

In 1995 Marie, who has been teaching since 1981, formed an association for bass- and tenor drummers in Scandinavia, The Bass and Tenor Drummers of Scandinavia (BTDS). The association has held numerous week-end courses for both bass- and tenor drummers in the Scandinavian countries and has even participated in the Drum corp competition at the CWC in 1997. The BTDS also instituted the competition for Best Bass- and Tenor Section held at the Scandinavian Championships each year. Furthermore, the association has established good contacts with Canada. Marie is a popular guest teacher at band week-ends throughout Scandinavia, and has taught in many of the Scandinavian bands. In 1996 and 1997 she also taught at The Scandinavian School of Piping and Drumming.

Marie is mostly known for developing the playing technique and her love for feathering and flourishing. Trying to improve the standard of feathering and flourishing in Scandinavia, she also designed a system for writing out the feathering and flourishing movements along with the music.

In her private life, well what is left of it, considering the amount of time she is putting into the piping community in Scandinavia, she is studying at Gothenburg University for a M.A. in Educational Leadership. Earlier she worked as a schoolteacher, especially with children with special needs. She is also a member of the board of The Pipe Band Association of Scandinavia, PBAS.

In 1994 Marie recieved the Pig Award for her dedicated work in the band, forming a drum-corps. In 1996 another award was given to her; the Hick Rat, as a token for her love and hard work in the BTDS.
