Canntaireachd

If you have tried to play piobaireachd at all, you have at least heard of canntaireachd - the sung notation of the old days. It may seem archaic to you who are used to printed music, but I found my understanding of the structure of the tunes improved a lot when I learned one of the canntaireachd dialects.

I have put together a page, which is basically copied from the preface to the Piobaireachd Society's books, with the basics of the Nether Lorn canntaireachd. You'll find it here. Eventually, I will also make available some info on the MacCrimmon canntaireachd.

Recordings

The Murrays have over the years been recorded three times. The first two are really old and not available any more. The third can be gotten directly from P/M Mats d Hermansson, and if you follow the link below you can hear some of the tracks in RealAudio format.
