M.E.T.H.O.D. MAN or Johnny Blaze or Meth or Hot Knickles or Ghost Rider... he got more a.k.a.īs then "hoe bitches got birth control pills" Back in the day though, he was simply Clifford Smith, Ironically, thatīs the name he avoids now. "Thatīs a slave name", says Meth, who became a member of the 5 Percent Nation at age 15 and lists his "real name" as Shakuan God Allah. "My birth name isnīt important, I donīt recognize that part." Meth is raised in the Park Hill project like the rest of the clan. They all shared the passion for comics, 5 percent nation and the Hip-hop culture. When he got older, Meth started slinging crack. "I hated selling that shit" Meth recalls. But he always remained optimistic, knowing he wouldnīt lurk on the streets forever. He had already earned a name around Staten Island as a mike ninja who packed serious rhymes. He was already a big fan of collecting aliases. Back then he was known as Shakuan the Poet a.k.a. The Crowd Seducer a.k.a. The Panty Raider a.k.a. Mr Dead Love. around 1990, Deck and them gave him the name that stuck the fastest Method, which means weed in Staten Island slang. "I felt like, Yo the nigga gonī get be famous" says Deck. A couple of years later Rza steped to his boys and said "Yīall niggas ainīt doing nothing. We gonna be in the studio today. Come with 100$ apiece, throw your darts and be out". The result was "Protect Ya Neck" and on the b-side "Method Man", Def Jam Records signed Meth a year later and in nine five he droped his solo debut "Tical". Today Meth describes the album as a rush job "It was the worst of the Wu solo joints Iīm my own worst critic". The Tical album introduced Street Thug and Carleton Fisk to the rap audience. Also featuring was Chef Raekwon on "Meth vs Chef" the Rza on "Mr Sandman" and Mary J Blige on "Iīll be there for you, youīre all I need to get by" which was a remake of the classic Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terell song. Since "Tical". Johnny Blaze has been the most visible clan member, apart from steling the show on every clan release so far he can be found on cuts with Prodigy, Redman Mobb Deep and Xzibit etc. etc. "When I rhyme with other people, I make sure that, no matter how many is on a track, Iīm gonī get noticed", and noticed he got. Methīs second coming "T2000 Judgment Day" was one of the most anticipated albums of the year nine-eight. |
