The Green Party of Sweden, Miljöpartiet de Gröna, was founded in 1981, largely as a reaction to the outcome of the Referendum on Nuclear Power held in 1980 and because of a growing concern about environmental problems.
Miljöpartiet took part in the general elections of 1982 and 1985, but it was not until 1988 that the party received more than the required 4% of the votes to be represented in the Swedish Parliament. Miljöpartiet gained 5.5% of the votes and was the first new party to enter the Swedish Parliament in 70 years! In 1991, Miljöpartiet obtained only 3.4% of the votes and was consequently forced out of parliament. However, a well planned campaign in 1994 brought the party back to Parliament with 5.02% of the votes. Finally, 1995 was the "boom-year" for the Green Party with 17.2% in the European parliamentary elections and 8 to 12% in regular opinion polls.
The party does not have a party leader, but is represented by two spokespersons, one man and one woman. Since 1992, this has been Marianne Samuelsson and Birger Schlaug.
Underlying the ideology of Miljöpartiet is the awareness that life itself is threatened by modern civilisation. A civilisation that produces dead lakes and forests, soil erosion, airpollution, poisoned soil and ground water, global warming and social collapse is not a life-supporting system. A sustainable society, on the other hand, can be ecologically and socially sustained for generations to come. It respects life in all its forms, is frugal with the resources of the world and tries to build a society which is socially and economically just.
As the basis for its ideology, Miljöpartiet agreed about Four Solidarities:

A prerequisite for bringing our policy to success is the engagement of all citizens of all ages. This can be achieved in many ways.
