Folk musician
Eva Åström Rune
Singer, composer and pedagogue
I specialize in the Swedish vocal tradition in its many forms:
herding calls, ballads, hymns, dance songs etc.
Being a free-lance musician, I work in different contexts such as tours
with music groups, theatre productions (contemporary as well as
traditional, with playing, singing, acting and dancing on stage), and I
also teach and compose.
As a composer, I move in a range between the traditional Swedish folk
styles and contemporary styles without boundaries.
Here is a brief summary of the characteristics of the vocal traditions
that I focus upon:
Herding calls - "kulning" - a special high-pitched vocal technique, a
means of communication to humans as well as to animals. This signal
system is known to have been in use since the Middle Ages - the calls
can be heard many miles away.
Ballads from medieval times and onwards, some of them mainly to be
danced to, some of them epic tales of fiction or gruesome reality.
Hymns dating back to the 1600:s in ancient regional styles, with a
soulsearching ornamentation using microtonality, trills and melismas.
Dance songs (mostly unaccompanied) trolling of various types of dances
from all over Sweden.
The groups I'm currently working with include:
Rosenbergs sjua - multi-part Swedish folk singing with string trio.
This group is unique in its arrangements and instrumentation, and we
tour both in and outside Sweden. The other members of the group are:
Susanne Rosenberg - vocals, Ulrika Bodén - vocals, Sofia Sandén -
vocals, Sven Ahlbäck - violin, Ellika Frisell/Hady Prett - viola, Annika
Wijnbladh - cello.
Alruna - Swedish hymn tradition meets Anatolian oud music. My fellow
musicians are: Robert Fölsch on oud, Johanna Dahl on cello and Ebba
Westerberg on percussion.
A Swedish - South African project. Ten years ago, I discovered the
treasure that is South African music. This is now bearing fruit in a
project that features Paul Hanmer on piano and Khanya Ceza and myself on
vocals, in a meeting between our musical traditions.
